Delhi’s famous Connaught Square is the focal point for locals and travelers alike. It is also here that there is an official tourist office. The square is actually a huge roundabout, if you can still call it that, with a large park in its center, a nearby market, and rotunda buildings housing upscale hotels, restaurants and local shops and western brands.
The streets leading to the roundabout are very wide and lined with trees. The square is connected with the metro. You can also get there by taxi and rickshaw. It is the ideal central point to visit Delhi because you can go anywhere and very easily in Delhi from this spot.
Visit the Grand Mosque of Delhi
As we don’t do things by halves on OneDayOneTravel, we suggest you visit the highest mosque in India , Jama Masjid. It was under the Islamic Mughal Empire that the Grand Mosque was built like many other ancient sites that can be visited in Delhi. The peculiarity of this mosque is that it has two minarets and several entrances which all lead to a central platform.
Jama Masjid mosque old delhi 3
To get there , go to Old Delhi at the Chawri Bazaar which is located not far from the Chandni Chowk shopping street. Be careful to cover your shoulders and legs.
Attention: Admission is free but 300 Rp may be requested at the entrance, on the fly, if you plan to take pictures inside. It’s a bit up to the customer. Several options are then available to the visitor.
We pay by thinking that it is a form of gift.
We say we won’t take a picture and we go home without paying after a good negotiation.
We refuse to pay and we then try to go through the other entrance, hoping to be able to enter quietly and finally get the long-awaited shot.
Once inside the mosque, all visitors, including Indians, obviously take pictures without having paid anything for the most part. So it’s up to you.
Visit Delhi’s Red Fort
The Red Fort is a must see site in Delhi. From the Grand Mosque, it takes a 10-minute walk to reach the fort dating from 1638 and recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort is surrounded by towering sandstone walls rising 30 meters. This is what strikes the mind when you arrive in front of the red fort of Delhi.
Once you have passed the entrance gate of the fort, you pass a corridor of overpriced souvenir stalls and finally you discover a pleasant wooded park punctuated by buildings opening certain rooms to the public. There is also a mosque there. The visit is quite short.
We do not keep a memorable memory of this visit but the advantage is that once inside the enclosure, there is calm, which is rare in Delhi. On the other hand, if you go to Agra , the city of the Taj Mahal, go visit the red fort which is absolutely magnificent. Address: Netaji Subhash Rd, Chandni Chowk, New Delhi Hours: Open Tuesday to Sunday from sunrise to sunset. Closed on Monday Price: 250 Rp per person (for foreigners)
